PANAJI: Recently TOI reported that the most popular career choice with students after HSSC was a combination of commerce and the media. It appears that the same goes with most students after SSC as well. While some are still stuck with the science stream, most students felt that commerce was the only other choice for them. The arts stream, on the other hand, had very few takers.
Cassandra Miranda, a student of Our Lady of the Rosary high school at Dona Paula, who has just completed her SSC, said that she wanted to pursue the arts stream. "Arts has a lot of subjects to choose from; I haven't really decided what I want to do as a career, but i'm sure I want to take arts," said the 16 year old. Aditya Phadte, on the other hand, decided to stick to the traditional route and opt for the science stream. "I want to do medicine, it's what I've always wanted to do; I guess it is because I love sociology," added the student of A J de Almeida high school, Ponda. His colleague ,Kaushal Sahakari, said that science was his preferred stream as well. Sahakari who wants to become an enginner said that he liked the science subject very much. However, 15 year old Fiona Soares, another student of Our Lady of Rosary high school, Dona Paula said that she has decided that commerce is definitely her "first and only choice". Soares, who wants to be a chartered accountant in the future said, "Maths comes pretty easy to me and India has a fast-growing economy, so it's obvious that we are going to need more entrepreneurs. That's why I chose commerce,". She further said that she hoped to become a chartered accountant in the future. Her classmate, Karen Pinto, said that she didnt know what she wanted to do in the future but she was sure she wanted to opt for commerce. "Most of my classmates also want to do commerce. I really don't know why," added the 15 year old. Pinto felt that arts was out of the question for her as she wasn't too good at history or geography.Lucilia Gonsalves, a French teacher at Holy Cross high school, Curtorim said that she felt that most students opted for the commerce stream . "However I encourage them to take arts as there are plenty of opportunities that this stream offers," she said. Lumena Rodrigues, an English and Social Science teacher at St. Mary's high school, Varca agreed that the most popular stream for students after SSC was commerce. With commerce most students further pursue "banking or business". "The second preferred choice is science and then medicine," she added. She felt that off late, many students had their eye on vocational courses as well.
